Good question – but actually, the first thing we need to clear up is the idea that your MacBook or MacBook Pro has an LED screen and not an LCD screen. The LED refers to just the backlight portion of your screen, not the entire screen itself. There is a common misconception that the current model MacBook and MacBook Pro do not use LCD screens.

So, what’s the deal? Well, before June of 2007, Apple laptops used <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” rel=”external nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.techrestore.com/”>LCD screens that used a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp as a “backlight”. And why would these need this backlight in the first place? Another good question – you’re on a roll. LCD screens need a backlight, because the screens themselves (the liquid crystal display part) do not actually emit any light. In order to see what is on your screen, you need a special light, located behind the glass LCD screen, to brighten things up enough for you to view them. A common repair for MacBook and MacBook Pro systems is a damaged screen due to a fall that causes the backlight to stop working. You can usually tell if your backlight is damaged – turn on your MacBook or MacBook pro, or your PowerBook or iBook for that matter, and if your screen looks dark, but you can still see things on the screen when you shine a flashlight onto it, chances are your screen has a damaged or non-functional backlight.

During 2007, Apple (and a bunch of other companies) decided that CCFL backlights were evil and they had to go. They were full of mercury (bad), they used up to much power (bad) and they broke rather easily (very bad). So, enter stage right, the LED powered backlight in June of 2007. Since that time, all Apple laptops have used a backlit LCD screen that has an LED based backlight. This has helped increase battery run-times, increased reliability and helped the environment all at the same time. All good.

The Apple Certified Technicians at TechRestore still see LED backlit MacBook and MacBook Pro systems arriving daily for repair. Even though the LED is more reliable and less fragile than the CCFL, they still break when dropped hard enough. TechRestore customers often ask if just the backlight can be replaced on a LCD screen, and while it is true that you can replace just the backlight in many LCD panels, the parts and labor costs are not that much lower than replacing the entire screen. Plus, the vast majority of screens that come in also have additional damage, either to the LCD itself or to the screen housing on the MacBook or MacBook Pro.

TechRestore technicians perform MacBook and MacBook Pro screen repairs on the same day they are received for our local customers and overnight for customers throughout the United States. Their award-winning technicians have mastered a proprietary “Factory-Fit” screen replacement process that insure that your new screen will look as good as new.

In October of 2008, Apple changed the MacBook forever. An entirely new version was released, with an aluminum “unibody” case carved from a single piece of aluminum. The other dramatic change was the introduction of a glass cover on top of the MacBook LCD screen. This glass screen cover matches the screen design on the MacBook Pro and provides a super-glossy, reflective screen that shows dramatic colors. The MacBook LCD screen uses an LED backlight that contains no mercury, is bright and evenly distributed and is very environmentally friendly.

Soon after the new MacBook was released, TechRestore announced a repair program for the MacBook glass screen cover as well as a MacBook unibody LCD screen repair. Both Mac repair programs have been very successful and well received by customers throughout the United States. With the addition of the glass screen cover on the unibody Apple MacBook, it has increased the difficulty of repairing MacBook screens and both the glass screen cover and the MacBook unibody LCD screen repair require an experienced and Apple certified technician to perform. Broken glass in MacBook unibody systems is becoming more common and TechRestore has designed a system to offer a “factory fit” repair that is not available from other Apple repair centers.

Another issue that customers noticed with the new MacBook unibody glossy screens was that they are very reflective and shiny. For some people, this is great and arguably the colors are brighter – when doing things like watching movies and viewing photos, the glossy screen is fantastic. But, when using the MacBook unibody with the glass screen cover and glossy screen, there is also a reflection that can be distracting. TechRestore remains the only company with a solution to this problem by offering an Anti-glare, matte finish screen replacement service for the Mac Book unibody systems. The repair has been so popular and the quality of the work so good that TechRestore was awarded a MacWorld Expo best of show award at the 2009 MacWorld Expo show in San Francisco.

We hear this many times each day at TechRestore, followed by additional comments like “Apple said I needed an entire new screen and it would cost $1200!” or “The computer dealer I took it to said that there is no way to replace just the broken glass on my MacBook Pro.”

Well, we have good news for you!

Since late 2008, <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link’]);” rel=”external nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.techrestore.com/”>MacBook Pro laptops have a piece of thin glass installed on top of the LCD screen at the factory. This glass serves a few different purposes:

1. Strength: the glass helps to make your screen housing stiffer and theoretically, stronger. But, if you are reading this article about breaking your glass on your MacBook Pro, then you might question that, yes?

2. Color – there is no doubt that the colors displayed on your MacBook Pro screen are more vivid, brighter and richer when presented behind the glass. The fact that the glass has a mirror-like glare is another issue altogether and will be covered in our next article.

OK, back to you broken glass on your MacBook Pro. TechRestore can help, we can help you fast and we can do it economically. Our Apple Certified Technicians have mastered the technique of removing the glass on MacBook Pro systems and installing a replacement glass. We use factory glass replacements that look exactly like the original glass and with our proprietary “factory-fit” process, your MacBook Pro will look just like it did before the glass LCD screen cover was broken.

And the best part, we perform this service for customers all over the U.S., with over 2000 local pickup locations. In even better news, we perform the repair in just 24-hours once we receive your MacBook Pro. The cost is just $299, which is just a bit better than $1200, right? And finally, we include a 1-year warranty and 1-year of telephone support for your repair. Good stuff.

To learn more about MacBook Pro glass replacement and repair, just visit the TechRestore website at http://www.techrestore.com or call 1-888-572-7372 if you can’t see anything through your broken screen.

Help is on the way!
